Laurie Olov, who blogs at “Aging In Place Technology Watch,” is a senior advocate, and one of the harshest critics of personal emergency response systems. Despite her concerns about PERS technology and the companies who market them, Ms. Orlov has provided a helpful summary of the reasons consumers still feel that investment in a PERS unit is useful to many elderly.

MedFirstAlert Expands Operations to South Carolina

MedFirst Alert LLC has announced its expansion into South Carolina.
Here’s an excerpt from a recent press release.
HealthPRSpider – Geriatrics: MedFirst Alert, LLC Announces its Expansion into South Carolina
MedFirst Alert LLC, a Personal Emergency Response System (PERS) provider, is proud to announce its expansion into South Carolina. MedFirst Alert provides medical alert systems to senior citizens living alone, caregivers to senior citizens, children of senior citizens, people with disabilities, diabetics and osteoporosis sufferers. CDC studies have shown 30% of persons aged 65 years and older each year fell. These injuries resulted in death, disability, nursing-home admission, and direct medical costs.
Technology is making the lives of dishonest people and those with violent intent a lot more difficult. They’re getting caught a lot more often. One hopes that this will have a positive impact on future crime rates, as has been reported in some places already.
Ubiquitous video and GPS technology are making it a lot more likely that crimes will be recorded, reported, and proved; the criminals who perpetrate these crimes are a lot more likely to be discovered and convicted because their actions, faces, and voices are being recorded. DNA evidence is being discovered and used.
That being the case, it seems that some simple and relatively inexpensive steps could be taken to protect the average homeowner (or car owner) from casual theft.
Take the case of the missing Ford Explorer recently reported by BrickHouse Security (see the link below).

GeoSkeeper Combines GPS with Voice Communication

The explosion of communication technology in recent years has made life for all of us a lot safer in many respects. A wonderful advance in caring for seniors and people with disabilities is the personal emergency response system (PERS). What some have been waiting for is a PERS system that also has GPS capability.
We recently came across the GeoSkeeper (TM), offered by Aerotel Medical Systems.
Aerotel GeoSkeeper – Personal Communicator with Distress Alarm and GPS | Daily Gadget News
Aerotel Medical System has just launch their new SKeeper family, called GeoSkeeper – a “peace of mind” product built for elderly, chronically ill, children or lone workers, as well as their relatives and caregivers. This GeoSkeeper offers an improved level of personal safety beyond existing PERS (Personal Emergency Response System) and traditional social alarm systems.
While the GPS feature is a tremendous advantage, the literature available doesn’t make it clear how the PERS feature (or the GPS feature, for that matter) operates. The device appears to be wearable, with a panic button, and two-way voice communication ability. It appears to be a good product, but more detailed information would be good.
At BASK Enterprises, we are proud of our state-of-the-art central station (our monitoring service) that makes our PERS system the best available. And you can be sure we will be looking for the possibility of adding GPS tracking in the future.
Review of Typical Personal Emergency Response Systems

I recently found a health blog commenting on personal emergency response systems. (Check out the link below.) The blog seems to be focused mainly on beauty, skin care, and related items. And while personal emergency response systems don’t seem to fit in that category, the fact is that much of our population who would be interested in beauty are also facing their soon retirement, senior status, and care for increased health needs.
In any case, it seems like an odd fit, but the article is pretty good, and the author did a nice job, so I thought I’d show it to you. I hope you like it.
Get Healthy and Dance Forever » Common Features of an Emergency Response System
The Personal Emergency Response system is put into operation when the user needs emergency help, such as the police, fire department or in the event of a medical emergency. The system user presses the help button on the transmitter, which automatically emits a radio signal that is picked up by the console. The console is pre- programmed to dial one or more telephone numbers that are selected by the user. For example, if an elderly person has fallen and injured a hip so that they can’t arise, the user would press the help button. The emergency response number would be dialed in many instances. This usually can be done even if the telephone handset is off the hook or in use. Some systems have information about medical history at the call center so that they would contact an adult child or a spouse.
