Technology is making the lives of dishonest people and those with violent intent a lot more difficult. They’re getting caught a lot more often. One hopes that this will have a positive impact on future crime rates, as has been reported in some places already.

Ubiquitous video and GPS technology are making it a lot more likely that crimes will be recorded, reported, and proved; the criminals who perpetrate these crimes are a lot more likely to be discovered and convicted because their actions, faces, and voices are being recorded. DNA evidence is being discovered and used.

That being the case, it seems that some simple and relatively inexpensive steps could be taken to protect the average homeowner (or car owner) from casual theft.

Take the case of the missing Ford Explorer recently reported by BrickHouse Security (see the link below).

A gentleman in Kansas City got out of his car for moment to get something out of his apartment, leaving the car running. Sure enough, a minute later the car was gone, and police proved unhelpful.

The victim was able to recover his vehicle quickly — due to his own aggressive pursuit of the thief — but justice will not be done, because the Kansas City police would not follow up on the lead. BrickHouse Security suggests some simple steps that might have allowed the owner to get his property back more easily, and with justice done as a bonus.

In a situation like this one, both the Car Camera Voyager and a GPS Tracking system would have been invaluable. The Car Camera Voyager could have provided video evidence of the thieves’ identities, and maybe even of how the cops reacted to his story, while a GPS Tracking system could also had helped him to locate the whereabouts of his car immediately.

There was once a time when leaving one’s car untended for a moment (or even all day) was not an invitation to theft or vandalism. Perhaps video and GPS technology will make those days a possibility again.
