Technology to Keep Track of Wandering Alzheimer’s Patients
Uncategorized November 22nd, 2009
One of the worries for those suffering from Alzheimer’s (and their loved ones) is the thought of wandering away from home. Many are faced with having to give close round-the-clock supervision to prevent Mom or Dad wandering off and getting lost – or worse.
But these concerns are becoming more manageable with modern technology. One company has recently released a product that allows monitoring with devices using GPS technology to keep track of wandering loved ones. Check out this report from The San Francisco Examiner on the high-tech gadgets being used to protect Alzheimer’s patients.

The Alzheimer’s Association is adapting technology developed for monitoring prisoners to let caregivers track where their loved ones drive or walk — and alert them if they go beyond the virtual fences each family can set.

How it works: The Alzheimer’s Association hired Omnilink Services, best known for prisoner monitoring, to run the Web mapping with various types of technology. Different manufacturers’ transmitters are certified as compatible. Families buy a transmitter for about $200, and then choose a monthly monitoring plan that can range from $43 to $80.
For those interested in maintaining a certain degree of independence, and for those who have the role of care-giver to Alzheimer’s sufferers, this type of technology could be the answer to their prayers.
