Staying Put, Moving In, or Moving On?
Uncategorized November 22nd, 2009
Dr. Jane Duhl at Silver Planet (www.silverplanet.com) offers a review of a recently-published book (“When the Time Comes,” by Paula Span) that should be a great resource — and a big help — to anyone dealing with the issues of senior health care.
Duhl describes the alternatives available to those of us facing the difficult choices: “staying put” is what most seniors want (independent living!); “moving in” — with a child or relative; and “moving on,” that is, independent or assisted living facilities.
The beauty of When the Time Comes is that it is told through family stories—real scenarios illustrating how children and their aging parents approached difficult questions about what to do next, because change is essential for the health and safety of a loved one. The aim of the book is to help seniors and their families assess which strategies are best suited to their own situation. While the book is filled with well organized and researched information, the stories are its heart.
