In the past, most overdoses were due to illegal narcotics, such as heroin, with most deaths in big cities. Prescription painkillers have now surpassed heroin and cocaine however, as the leading cause of fatal overdoses, Paulozzi says.

One great reason for having a personal emergency response system is to allow seniors to maintain a high degree of independent living, but still be able to reach medical help in the event of drug overdoses, adverse drug interaction, or even failure to take medication at the prescribed times!

With the increase of ailments causing pain as the baby boomers age, the problem of legal addiction and overdose is also going to increase.
