A personal emergency response system is a way of communicating with the push of a button that you need assistance. You may remember the old commercial of the elderly lady who said, “Help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.” The idea is that no matter where you are, even if you can’t reach a telephone, you can simply push a button to summon help.

A personal emergency response system (also referred to as “PERS”) will often involve nothing more than pressing a button to signal for help. Some of the more advanced systems may also allow you to speak with someone who can find out what’s wrong and summon the appropriate help.

How the Personal Emergency Response System Works

There are three parts to a PERS system: a transmitter (the “panic button”), a console connected to your phone system, and the emergency response center.

The transmitter is usually worn by the user around the neck, on a wristband, or kept conveniently close at hand. Should an emergency arise requiring assistance, you simply push the panic button on the transmitter. The transmitter then sends a signal to the console that is connected to your phone system.

What happens when I “Push the Panic Button?”

When the console receives a signal from your panic button, it dials a pre-coded telephone number to contact the emergency response center.

The Emergency Center

When the console dials the emergency center, trained personnel will call local emergency authorities to dispatch appropriate rescue personnel to your location. All with just a push of a button!
